Cactus plants
When Columbus came to the New World, he encountered some plants that
were unknown in Europe: cactus plants. Since these plants were/are even
rare in Asia and Africa, the massive distribution of them in North and
South America was very intriguing to the settlers.
Some of the variations on cactus plants include:
• Prickly pear
• Christmas
• Saguaro
• Barrel
Cactus plants have a rare ability to retain water in the most dry,
arid regions of the world. Since most of the water is caught underground
through the roots, cacti have spines instead of leaves. This also gives
the plant more of a fleshy look – because there’s no need
for branches to catch water.
